• This is very cool, look into this, there's a lot going on here, read the wiki page at least. I got the scans off 4chan many years ago. I'm pretty sure this is the original edition of the book, not the 'Revisited' version they 'kickstarted' in 2014 (looking at the page count). I don't know if there are scans of the newer version--surely there are? I've not come across them but I've not had a good look. Oh, and this is the 'official' website or whatever. There is a nice wee collection of articles on it, I wonder if they're just pulled from the book?

[1999] Visual Experiments Lain

• "Visual Experiments Lain is a book of illustrations and information about the Serial Experiments Lain anime. It does not have a single author, but a production staff headed by Acura Honda (本田あきら) from AX magazine. It was originally published in 1999, and reissued in 2013. The contents of the 2013 edition appear to be unaltered from the original, with the exception of the staff credits page."
• "It includes many screencaps, production art (i.e. layouts and storyboards), and information about the anime's production process. It also contains several original illustrations and staff interviews. Most of the production art and original illustrations are by Takahiro Kishida. [2003] Futurhythm: Range Murata 2nd Drawing Works Limited Edition 48+28

• Range Murata's "second major professional release".
• A little harder finding information for this one and verifying its integrity, however, this nifty website appears to be the best and maybe only proper resource on the subject.
• I believe this is the version these scans come from, so this upload does appear to contain the full "48+28" (I did the math) that makes up the core of this release plus some extra stuff.


[2006] Formcode: Range Murata 3rd Drawing Works Limited Edition 24+20

• "Murata's third major professional artbook release". In addition to the core "24+20" it includes the "book-in-book (AFTER SERVICE)" and the "futuregraph A4 book".
• OK, so if you look at the page numbers you'll notice there appears to be two pages missing. Well, after a lot of digging I can put our minds at ease and safely conclude it is simply a page numbering mistake.
• The info image says they didn't scan the posters but I believe I have found them and have included them in a seperate folder.
• Big scans! Hmm, I could probably take one of these down to the print shop and get it on a nice canvas...

Do you really have the guts for that? Imagine the look you'd get after asking them to do "formcode_poster.jpg".



[2006] yoshitoshi ABe lain illustrations: ab# rebuild an omnipresence in wired

• "An Omnipresence in Wired is the Serial Experiments Lain artbook that was released only in Japan in 1999. A heavily modified version, ab# rebuild, was released in 2006 in both Japan and the United States."
